Jack Betts, celebrated for his portrayal of Henry Balkan in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man (2002) and renowned for his extensive work in spaghetti Westerns and theater, passed away peacefully in his sleep on June 19, at the age of 96. His nephew, Dean Sullivan, confirmed the news of his passing.
Born in New Jersey and raised in Miami, Betts was inspired to pursue acting after viewing the film Wuthering Heights in 1939. He honed his craft at the University of Miami and later trained at the prestigious Actors Studio in New York. His acting journey began on Broadway with Richard III, and he subsequently appeared in various stage productions and films, including a notable three-year stint in the play Dracula.
During the 1960s, Betts featured in several popular Italian Westerns, including Sugar Colt. He later made appearances in American television series such as Seinfeld, Friends, Frasier, and Everybody Loves Raymond.
His final screen roles included appearances in My Name Is Earl, Recovery Road, and Good Trouble (2019).
The Beverly Hills Playhouse paid tribute to him, stating, 'Our beloved Jack Betts passed away peacefully at home. There was only ever one like him, and we are richer for having had his presence in our theater. Rest in peace, Jack.'
