Weather Forecast: Cyclonic Storm Threatening South India as Low Pressure Forms Over Bay of Bengal

Send Push

A significant weather development is currently unfolding in South India. A low-pressure system has formed over the southwest Bay of Bengal, and this depression is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm. This system is anticipated to bring severe weather conditions to the coastal regions of Nellore in South Andhra Pradesh and North Puducherry. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has confirmed that this weather phenomenon is moving towards the coastlines and is likely to make an impact on October 17.

Cyclone Forecast for Southern India

The system that began forming over the Bay of Bengal is expected to bring heavy rains, strong winds, and storm surges to various coastal states in South India. At present, the depression is centered over Tamil Nadu, with widespread torrential rain forecasted across several states.

States Affected by the Cyclonic System

The states likely to experience the most severe weather conditions due to this low-pressure system are Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and South Andhra Pradesh. The IMD has stated that the system could strengthen over the next 36 hours, heading towards these states’ coastal regions.

As a result, a high alert has been issued for several regions, including Nellore, Rayalaseema, and Coastal Andhra Pradesh. Warnings of torrential rain, flooding, and strong winds have been given to these areas. Communities residing near the coast are advised to stay prepared for potentially dangerous conditions over the coming days.

Across Southern India

The Meteorological Department has issued an alert for heavy rainfall in multiple southern states. Due to the system’s trajectory, these regions will see substantial rainfall over the next 48 hours.

  • Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Kerala are expected to receive extremely heavy rainfall.
  • Lakshadweep and Karnataka, including its coastal and southern regions, are also on high alert for heavy showers.
  • Andhra Pradesh and Telangana will experience widespread rainfall, with intense downpours in Rayalaseema and Coastal Andhra Pradesh.

In contrast, light to moderate rain is expected in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh as the low-pressure system influences wider weather patterns across India.

Red, Orange, and Yellow Alerts for Different States

Due to the imminent threat posed by this developing weather system, the IMD has issued multiple alerts for different states:

  • Red Alert: Issued for Tamil Nadu, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Rayalaseema. These areas should expect extremely heavy rainfall, strong winds, and possible flooding.
  • Orange Alert: Issued for Kerala, South Karnataka, and Coastal Karnataka. This warning signals very heavy rainfall and potential disruptions in daily activities.
  • Yellow Alert: Issued for North Karnataka, Goa, and Konkan, indicating moderate to heavy rain and high wind speeds.

Residents in these regions are urged to follow safety guidelines and stay updated with the latest weather bulletins.

Schools and Colleges Closed in Bengaluru

As the storm approaches, Bengaluru has already experienced torrential rain, prompting authorities to declare a holiday for all schools and colleges on Wednesday, October 16. The city is preparing for continued heavy downpours and potential disruptions to daily life.

In addition, people working in corporate offices have been encouraged to work from home, as roads may be impassable due to flooding. The municipal authorities are taking measures to reduce damage and ensure the safety of the citizens.

Depression Over Southwest Bay of Bengal Intensifies

The depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal has been gaining momentum, moving west-northwestwards at a speed of 12 kmph over the past six hours. As of October 16, it was located near latitude 12.1° N and longitude 82.5° E. The low-pressure system is expected to further develop into a cyclonic storm within the next 36 hours.

The progression of the storm will likely lead to heavy downpours across South India, particularly in coastal regions. Warnings of high sea tides, storm surges, and landslides have been issued for areas susceptible to such disasters.

Potential Cyclonic Threat

According to weather agencies, the system’s intensity could increase to a Category 1 or 2 cyclonic storm, leading to severe wind speeds and dangerous sea conditions. Fishermen have been advised to stay away from the sea, as the Bay of Bengal is likely to experience rough to very rough sea conditions.

Delhi Weather Forecast: A Mild Cold Begins

While southern India faces heavy rainfall, Delhi is beginning to experience the onset of a mild cold during the mornings and evenings. According to the IMD, the minimum temperature in Delhi-NCR is expected to drop over the coming days, signaling the arrival of winter.

The sky in Delhi will remain mostly clear, with patches of cloud cover throughout the week. The maximum temperature in the city is expected to range between 33-35°C, while the minimum will hover around 16-17°C.

Clear Skies and Moderate Temperatures in Delhi

Despite the impending cooler temperatures, Delhi will maintain clear skies for most of the week. According to IMD officials, there will be no significant rainfall, and the weather will remain stable. This period will mark a transition from the monsoon season to the winter months.

Skymet Weather Forecast for the Next 24 Hours

In line with the IMD predictions, Skymet Weather, another renowned weather agency, has confirmed the possibility of heavy rainfall over the next 24 hours in several parts of South India.

  • Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Southern Karnataka are expected to experience widespread heavy rains, especially in coastal and interior regions.
  • Light rainfall is predicted in Telangana, Goa, and the Konkan Coast, alongside intermittent showers in Northeast India, Sikkim, Odisha, and Southeast Rajasthan.

This weather activity is being closely monitored, and additional advisories will be issued as the storm continues to develop.
