New Delhi, May 2, 2025 The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a ‘Red Alert’ for Delhi-NCR, warning of severe weather conditions including thunderstorms, torrential rain, and high-velocity winds. The alert is in effect for Friday, with continued bad weather expected through the weekend across Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, and surrounding regions.
Strong Winds and Heavy Rain Cause DisruptionsThe capital region woke up to stormy weather on Friday morning, with winds gusting between 70-80 km/h, accompanied by intense lightning and downpours. The high-speed winds uprooted trees, damaged structures, and led to tragic incidents—at least four deaths have been reported due to falling debris and structural collapses.
Additionally, more than 100 flights were affected at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport, with delays and diversions due to poor visibility and hazardous weather conditions. Several roads and low-lying areas were waterlogged, severely impacting traffic and daily routines.
IMD Warns of Risks and Potential DamagesIn its advisory, the IMD highlighted several risks associated with the current weather pattern:
-
Tree branches breaking or trees uprooting due to high winds.
-
Damage to standing crops, especially banana and papaya plantations.
-
Electric supply lines at risk from fallen branches.
-
Orchards and farms vulnerable to damage from strong winds and hailstorms.
-
Injuries to people and animals in open spaces from hail or falling debris.
-
Structural damage to poorly built or temporary housing.
-
Flying debris posing a hazard to people and vehicles.
The IMD has advised citizens to remain alert and take precautionary measures during this red alert period:
-
Stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel.
-
Secure doors and windows, and keep away from trees, signboards, and temporary structures.
-
Avoid taking shelter under trees or near unstable walls and poles.
-
Unplug electronic appliances and avoid contact with electrical devices.
-
Move out of water bodies immediately and refrain from touching metal surfaces during lightning.
-
If in transit, find safe shelter and do not lie down on concrete floors or lean against concrete walls.
According to the IMD, unstable weather will continue across North India through May 5–7, with isolated hailstorms, lightning, and gusty winds expected. Citizens are urged to monitor official weather updates and follow emergency protocols issued by local authorities.
