Passenger Bus Overturns in Chittorgarh While Attempting Overtake; Five Injured

Speeding to Compete for Passengers Leads to Crash on Udaipur-Nimbahera Highway

Chittorgarh, April 29 — In a disturbing incident highlighting the dangers of reckless driving, a private passenger bus overturned on the Udaipur-Nimbahera highway near Sujakheda village under the Mandphiya police station limits on Tuesday. The accident left at least five passengers injured, two of them seriously, after the bus driver lost control while attempting to overtake another vehicle.

According to police sources and eyewitnesses, the bus was traveling at high speed in a bid to compete for passengers — a common but dangerous practice among private bus operators on the route.

Reckless Driving Blamed as Bus Carrying Over 50 Passengers Overturns

The bus, belonging to Rajdhani Private Transport, was en route from Nimbahera to Udaipur when it lost balance near Sujakheda and overturned. Over four dozen passengers were reportedly on board at the time of the accident.

Fortunately, officers from Mandphiya Police Station, who were nearby, rushed to the scene and transported the injured to Chikarda Primary Health Centre using their private vehicle. After preliminary treatment, two severely injured passengers — Gangabai of Kurabad and Jagdish Chandra of Udaipur — were referred to Chittorgarh District Hospital. Three others continued to receive treatment at Chikarda PHC.

The injured have been identified as:

• Ghisibai, resident of Jantai

• Gangabai, resident of Kurabad (referred to Chittorgarh)

• Kamlabai, resident of Nikumbh

• Jagdish Chandra, from Udaipur (referred to Chittorgarh)

• Saroj Devi, also from Udaipur

Local Outrage Over Repeated Accidents and Lack of Regulation

The accident has reignited concerns over overspeeding and lack of enforcement on the busy highway stretch between Nimbahera and Mangalwad, where such incidents have become frequent. Local residents and passengers voiced frustration over the lack of regulatory checks on private bus operators, especially those running without proper permit inspections and flouting speed norms.

Devi Lal, a local villager, stated, “These types of accidents have occurred several times. The buses run at extremely high speeds and often meet with accidents while overtaking. If strict action is not taken now, such mishaps will continue in the future.”

Despite repeated accidents, residents allege that transport authorities and public representatives have failed to intervene meaningfully. With recurring fatalities and injuries, calls are growing louder for immediate regulatory reform and stricter enforcement of safety standards on this high-risk corridor.
