Miami, May 5 — Oscar Piastri continued his sensational form in the 2025 Formula 1 season by clinching his third consecutive victory at the Miami Grand Prix, delivering McLaren yet another remarkable one-two finish. Starting from fourth on the grid, the Australian driver showcased flawless execution and overtaking prowess to beat his rivals and move 16 points clear of teammate Lando Norris in the drivers’ championship.
McLaren Turns Tables with Dominant PerformanceJust two years ago, McLaren was among the slowest teams at the Miami GP. Fast forward to 2025, and they’ve won the same race by more than 35 seconds. Piastri’s statement after the race underscored the team’s turnaround:
“It’s unbelievable to think we’re winning here after being lapped a couple of years ago.”
Teammate Lando Norris, despite an early clash with Max Verstappen, recovered strongly to take second place, ensuring McLaren’s dominance on the American street circuit.
Verstappen’s Pole Curse Continues in MiamiDespite starting on pole position, reigning world champion Max Verstappen could only manage fourth place, once again failing to convert a Miami pole into a win — a streak that has persisted since the circuit’s introduction.
George Russell of Mercedes took third, albeit finishing 37.644 seconds behind the leader. Alex Albon (Williams) secured fifth, followed by Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes), Charles Leclerc (Ferrari), and Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari) in sixth, seventh, and eighth respectively.
Early Drama: Norris vs. VerstappenThe opening lap delivered immediate excitement as Norris and Verstappen collided at Turn 2, forcing Norris briefly off the track and resulting in a three-place drop. No penalties were handed out by race stewards.
Commenting on the incident, Norris said:
Piastri’s Clinical Drive Makes History“If I don’t go for it, people complain. If I do, they still complain. With Max, it’s either contact or no overtake.”
Piastri’s racecraft was on full display. He overtook Antonelli on lap 4 and passed Verstappen soon after. Norris recovered and made his move on Verstappen by lap 17, sealing a 1-2 for McLaren.
The race saw three Virtual Safety Car (VSC) periods, triggered by retirements from Alpine, Haas, and Sauber due to mechanical failures.
