Udaipur : On the auspicious occasion of Vijayadashami, Dr. Lakshyaraj Singh Mewar, a member of the former royal family of Mewar, performed a traditional puja (worship) of historic weapons along with his son, Bhanwar Haritraj Singh Mewar.

On Saturday, Dr. Lakshyaraj Singh offered prayers at the ‘Salehkhan’ (armory), built during the reign of Maharana Uday Singh II (1537-1572 AD). He acquainted his son Haritraj Singh with the historical significance of the weapons of Maharana Sanga, Maharana Raj Singh, the immortal hero Maharana Pratap, and other valorous Maharanas.

The puja included:

  • 7 historic swords
  • 1 shield
  • 1 spear
  • 2 guns
  • 2 daggers
  • A bow and arrow

These weapons, especially the swords, were made of high-quality steel and were a hallmark of Mewar’s craftsmanship. The swords were intricately decorated with gold, kundan, and meenakari work. The shields, spears, and daggers also exhibited exceptional craftsmanship. The two guns featured gold inlay work and were considered among the most ancient and important weapons. The bow and arrow represented the primary weapons of the Mewar tribals in Maharana Pratap’s army.

Incorporating Military Heritage The flags of the Sizzon Infantry, Mewar Lancers, and Nishan were also included in the puja. The Sizzon Infantry was formed during the reign of Maharana Sajjan Singh (1874-1884 AD). The Mewar Lancers were formed during the reign of Maharana Fateh Singh (1884-1930 AD). The Nishan flag, bearing the image of the sun and Mewari dagger, was also included.

Significance of Vijayadashami In the Mewar dynasty, there is a tradition of worshipping weapons on Ashwin Shukla Dashami, the day of Vijayadashami. After nine days of worshipping Shakti during Navratri, the tradition of ‘Shastra Puja’ (weapon worship) is followed on Dussehra.
